It does this successfully through aseries of relationships, not only of a sexual nature but alikerelationships between Rivers and his patients, which reveal howdifficult it is for rivers to form a trust relationship with patientsand how stressful their revelations are on him. There are alsoexamples of friendships, between Sassoon and Graves, and love, inparticular between Priors and Sarah.One of the first relationships we come across is the doctor - patientrelationship between Sassoon and Rivers. Evidence from their firstconversations seems to suggest that at to the lowest degree on an intellectual levelthey are equal.
